As for fans' interpretations of the characters and their imagining other stories, I'm delighted by them all. It's a great compliment to the show. And since they are, after all, fictional characters, any fiction created around them would seem to be fair -- within reason, of course. I doubt Emmett will be joining the next Olympic men's pole-vaulting team -- except in his dreams!

I must also express to you how deeply Dan and I, as well as all gay people in our country, are affected by what we read in the news about how gay people are treated in your country. It is with profound sadness to know that gay people must contend with such cruelty and abuse. As you say, it creates nothing but walls of hatred and fear. One can only hope that as a younger generation replaces the old one in your country, such ideas and behavior will disappear and that you will be able to express who you are without reprisals. The fact that you watch Queer As Folk and write your own stories is not only an expression of creativity, but an act of tremendous courage. As is writing to us.

We warmly embrace you and the story writers with humility, respect and appreciation.

Your fans,

Ron & Dan

And here is my letter:
Dear Daniel and Ron,

it is a great joy and honor for me to be writing to you on behalf of Russian fans of "Queer as Folk".

Thank you ever so much for the show and for being open to its resumption, as well as to communication with fans. Thank you for reading this letter. It is incredibly valuable for me to tell you how much "Queer as Folk" means for us, living in the country where being gay so often equals to being sad.

The show gave us a glimpse of a lifestyle we can only hope to have in our country in some distant day. You showed gay and straight Russians that people of all orientations can live together, as a family. You let gay Russians know that there is a way to stand up for themselves, to be out and proud, to enjoy being queer. I do hope that once we will get the chance to put this knowledge into practice.

Your show made us feel united with international gay community, and I think that feeling of unity is something extremely important nowadays, when bigotry is trying to put walls between nations. I believe, it's a perfect time for QaF reunion.

There are so many questions I would like to ask, but I chose one. Did you name Blake Wyzecky after William Blake, to make an allusion to the poet's works "The Little Boy Lost" and "The Little Boy Found"?

As a token of our gratitude and admiration, I dare to send you two best Russian fan stories about post-canon life of Ted, Blake and Emmett. I translated them from Russian into English because I thought they were really worth trying to show you. My maddest dream is to know what you think about these works and whether you agree with the author's interpretation of supporting characters of the show.

Best regards, Julia Syrbu

Dear QAFamily, here I come today to share my joy. Some time ago Anna Cavanaugh Reichow forwarded to Dan Lipman and Ron Cowen my letter written on behalf of Russian fandom and LGBT community, and — my, oh my — Ron answered me! He even read two fan stories I sent him in my translation.
*Anna asked me to mention that from now on fanmail for Dan and Ron will be published on QAF Reunion website*
Here is their letter:

Dear Julia,

First, I must thank you for being such a devoted fan of Queer As Folk. It means a great deal to Dan and me to know we have touched people's lives, and hopefully, for the better. Thank you, also, for sending the two fan stories about Ted, Emmett and Blake. I was incredibly impressed by your translation. If I hadn't known, I would have assumed English was your first language. To discover that this isn't the case is astonishing. I'm also amazed at the quality of the writing, as well as the writers' awareness of American culture and slang -- although I doubt too many Americans, outside the academic community, read a page of Dostoevsky and weep! (As it happens, I'm seeing a production of "Crime and Punishment" here in NYC off-Broadway tomorrow night, directed by a well-known Russian director!).

To respond to your question, Blake's name was not a reference to the poet or to his poems. But if you'd like to tell people they are, that would be fine with me! We did, however, have several literary allusions in the show. My favorite was Brian's altering the opening sentence of Kafka's "Metamorphosis" to apply to Ted. "Ted Schmidt awoke one morning with alarm to discover he had become a giant..." I also loved one on line hater's response to it as typical of our terrible writing! I'm still laughing.
